I went flying on Saturday and my dad jokingly posted a comment on a picture that I put on Facebook asking me to come over Sunday. I was already going to call them to come pick me at 8am, so we could have breakfast together. So went ahead and told him to meet me at the airport at 8. He called me later thinking I was joking, I was serious of course, so I also asked my sister to come out and bring her kids.

Awesome morning! Got to see my dad, mom, sister, brother in law, niece, and nephew. Normally it’s almost a three hour drive. This made it so I could go over in the morning, be back by noon to beat the weather, and make it to my wife’s families cook out in the afternoon. This little flight is certainly going to become more routine. Can’t wait to gain more proficiency so I’m confident enough to take my wife along too.

A little cool side note is gas is $3.30 a gallon. I burned 7 gallons to go there and back. Tolls alone are $10 each way, plus gas to drive. So it was $25 cheaper to fly, plus it saved 4.5 hours of drive time.

Ended up doing 4-5 touch and goes before a final full stop landing. Weather was quite challenging this afternoon .

The morning was beautiful. The winds were calm and the engine was very happy. The flight home was pretty bumpy though but it was 5pm and the clouds were scattered to broken cumulus.

I’ve sorted out how to touchdown in the plane as well. My technique is pretty simple:

final approach speed is 75-80 mph at 1500 rpm with my 54x49 propeller
throttle to idle when I have the runway made
eyes to the end of the runway when I have it made
round out to a level attitude to arrest my sink rate
when I feel the plane start to sink I feed in a slight amount of back pressure, just enough to bring the nose up very slightly to insure I don’t skip off. Then I hold that angle until the main wheels touch.
after the mains touch I smoothly apply full forward stick while doing my best to keep it straight with the rudders.
when the tail comes down then I start slowing with brakes using back and forth brake pressure but trying to keep the rudder pedals straight.
