My first morning commute

My first commute to work in the dragonfly went off without a hitch. The morning was beautiful. The winds were calm and the engine was very happy. The flight home was pretty bumpy though but it was 5pm and the clouds were scattered to broken cumulus.

I’ve sorted out how to touchdown in the plane as well. My technique is pretty simple:

  • final approach speed is 75-80 mph at 1500 rpm with my 54x49 propeller
  • throttle to idle when I have the runway made
  • eyes to the end of the runway when I have it made
  • round out to a level attitude to arrest my sink rate
  • when I feel the plane start to sink I feed in a slight amount of back pressure, just enough to bring the nose up very slightly to insure I don’t skip off. Then I hold that angle until the main wheels touch.
  • after the mains touch I smoothly apply full forward stick while doing my best to keep it straight with the rudders.
  • when the tail comes down then I start slowing with brakes using back and forth brake pressure but trying to keep the rudder pedals straight.
